RE: Rain, Can I get the TT out?

I wonder how folks end up with a 2wd truck without limited slip.

RE: AWD vs 2WD

It doesn't make any sense to me how the TV would be more stable in AWD, unless you were in a very low-traction situation (like snow or ice). On dry (or even wet) pavement I can't imagine how it would make any difference, except for the possible placebo effect.:)
Having owned a couple of Audi All Wheel Drive cars, yes, you can tell the difference, even in perfect conditions. Yes, it may hurt fuel economy a little bit, and obviously promote a little more drive train wear. These weren't tow vehicles, but none the less, they offer awesome grip in all conditions.

RE: Sold on Dodge Mega Cab...

I was close to going with the diesel, but the extra cost and difference in gas mileage was not enough to make it economically feasible. I figured it would take about 10 years to make up the difference in mileage.
So not true. The mileage on a diesel is so much better compared to the Hemi that it is shameful. Have towed with a Hemi and a CTD and no need to comment any further.
As to the price difference. Not true either...especially compared to the Hemi. In addition, the price difference is made at resale every time.
I'm thinking you haven't priced used diesels lately, much less used trucks.

Yep, time for this topic again. It's 3 weeks into August. Time to hash it out ALL over again. Oh well, just buy a Smart Car.

RE: GM's new Hybrid Truck

I can't see getting excited about a truck that gets 21/22 MPG. I'm getting 19 with a 3/4 ton with a lot more hauling potential.
I seriously doubt your 3/4 ton will touch 21 in around town driving. Different strokes for different folks.

RE: new idea for a truck shootout?

I'll take fuel economy over speed anyday. I'm guessing the first gen Cummins were some of the best in pulling and fuel economy.
Who needs to go 80MPH up a 45% grade?

RE: new idea for a truck shootout?

How about hook 'em all to the same 10k trailer; give them $500 for fuel; and see who goes the most distance driving the speed limit?
That's a shoot out I would like to see.
Any and all will get the job done. When we can go FT I want the most miles per dollar.
As I was opening this thread, that was my thought on the "shootout".

RE: Bye Bye Suburban....Hello Silverado 2500HD!!!!!!

The Duramax is very "car like" My 03 LT is sweet, and it's not loud but it does take a while to get used to that extra gear. :)

Actually, that wasn't a very nice comment by me, so I deleted it. :)

RE: 2009 XFE GM pickups (Xtra Fuel Economy)

Remember folks, the EPA is using a new, tougher mpg test as of 2008 models. Personally, I never had a problem getting my OLD EPA highway numbers, so I expect that with a bit of attentive driving it will be easy to top the new EPA rating in real life freeway cruising at 65 mph.
Excellent point. You can go to fueleconomy.gov to see the old and new numbers on older vehicles.

RE: 2009 XFE GM pickups (Xtra Fuel Economy)

I see GM is intent on build a truck for folks who don't need a truck.
Unfortunatly, building trucks for people that dont need them has long been a large segment of the truck market.
Agreed, but GM's (and all the others building half ton trucks) problem now is that folks are realizing they don't need them. And they aren't buying.

RE: Bye Bye Suburban....Hello Silverado 2500HD!!!!!!

Although there are some of us who prefer the sound of a nicely revved gas engine(4-5000), over the rattly sound of a diesel!!
I am in that camp as well. I will also say, IF his new 2003 3/4 ton diesel doesn't outperform the 1/2 Ton Sub, something is wrong. It will be louder and fuel will cost more, and pumps will be messier.. etc. etc. etc....., but it should out pull the Sub.

RE: 2009 XFE GM pickups (Xtra Fuel Economy)

3.08 axle ratio, better areodynamics, soft tonneau cover, lower ride height, 2wd only, lower chin spoiler, and even a few more hp/tq. This is NOT a hybrid.
15city/21hwy rated, up from 14/20 for the regular 5.3L V8.
Tow rating drops to 7000#.

RE: USA Today: Chrysler hybrids near front of pack

Don't drink the Koolaid!
These SUV hybrids are so overpriced that you will come out much better getting the gasoline version. BTW, my gas Tahoe gives me 22/15/11.5 hwy/cty/tow milage. It costs $20k less than the hybird, at $4/gal, that 5000 gals of gas. The only improvement is in the city, and 5000 gals at 15 mgp is 75,000 miles of city driving (that'll never happen). But, the improvement is actually only 5 mpg in the city!
Two words: BAD DEAL!
The costs will come down, and the price difference is not 20K based on new prices on the Tahoe. The difference is around 8K for a comparably equipped model (per carsdirect.com), I will give you that, and that buys a LOT of gas.
I think what some forget, is the LESS gas we all use, the better off we all are.

RE: USA Today: Chrysler hybrids near front of pack

I think Ford is missing a big opportunity by not building a Crown Victoria hybrid. They would own the taxi market instantly and a big part of the police market as well. Big engine compartment, rear-wheel drive. They could probably use the Escape drive-train with an extra low-speed electric motor for faster acceleration.
Sadly, a hybrid Crown or Mercury Marquis will be very costly for a taxi fleet to purchase.
I saw a Toyota Camry hybrid displayed outside my local Costco, and it listed for close to $35k! What taxi fleet wants to make that expenditure? It's gonna take a lot of miles of taxiing to recoup that cost difference in fuel savings, and even as we post, the price of gasoline and diesel is coming down rather quickly.
Except for the Honda Civic hybrid, all the other hybrids are priced up their in the ionisphere. Sadly, try and find a Honda Civic hybrid. Most are all scooped up by frightened consumers, buying them at list or above. Priuses are basically unobtainable until next years model hits.
I still hope that when Hyundai comes out with a hybrid as they are promising, that they will hold the line on pricing, and help drive down these terribly inflated prices for that type of vehicle.
Camry Hybrids start at 26,4xx. So you saw a VERY loaded example.
